Diego Schwartzman v Sam Querrey Head to Head
They played five times before and Schwartzman is leading 3-2. The most recent one came in 2019.
Schwartzman Struggles on Grass
Diego Schwartzman loves clay, tolerates hard courts and generally avoids grass. He’s one of the players that is quite happy with the grass season being as short as it is.
Schwartzman is coming off of a short break following Roland Garros where he played some strong tennis but failed to solve the Novak Djokovic riddle once more. Now it’s time to see what can the Argentine do on grass where he still doesn’t have a winning record on the surface.
A 24-12 season is very good for him and he’s usually quite consistent but he’s never quite figured out grass. He can play well on it but his strengths are well suited for grass. His serve is not as powerful although quite precise. His shorter stature doesn’t help him with volleying but his movement and quickness can make him tricky to play.
He’s played a quarterfinal here in 2019 taking down players such as Cilic so he can certainly play well on his day. Querrey is a measured opponent for him and one that should ease him well in the grass season. Especially if his return is on point.
Retirement, Maybe, Possibly for Querrey?
Sam Querrey used to be a very tricky opponent but nowadays he’s mostly playing tennis sporadically. It mostly comes down to a few events back home in America and the grass season. He’s always played the best on grass and he’s still a formidable opponent on it.
Just this year, five of his 7 wins on the year came on the grass in recent weeks. He’s 7-9 overall which clearly signals the end of a solid career but fur not he’s still playing. Queen’s is not an unfamiliar place for him as he played in the quarterfinal twice before.
It’s been a while since that happened but last year he played a semifinal in Stuttgart and a final in Mallorca on grass. He bested Pablo Carreno Busta at Wimbledon and while the Spaniard openly dislikes grass he is still a consistent top 20-30 player.
All in all, Querrey can be dangerous on grass if you give him a chance. Beating Schwartzman will be tough but if he puts up a serving clinic and volleys well. Why not.
Schwartzman v Querrey Prediction and Tip
So obviously Diego is the better player. He’s got a very good return and he will need it to work perfectly if he hopes to win this match. It should be a close one as I expect Querrey to play well and be motivated but I don’t see him winning this match.
I just think Diego will find enough holes in the game of his opponent to win the match. Even if he drops a close first set I still think he will have enough to come back and win. There is quite a bit of value on Schwartzman and I’ll back him to get the job done.
