Kudermetova Rallies Past Sabalenka

Veronica Kudermetova has been in top form this season and she continued to demonstrate that in the first round in Berlin, knocking out the third seed Aryna Sabalenka with a come-from-behind victory.

Sabalenka, who was the runner-up in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last week, outplayed the Russian in the first set. She also built a 1-4 lead in the second, but Kudermetova made a solid comeback to take the second. In the deciding set, Kudermetova got the solitary break in the seventh game before going on to clinch the contest 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

With the win, Kudermetova improved her season record to 24-12. The World No. 24 has already featured in three finals this year in Melbourne, Dubai and Istanbul but hasn’t added to her only title she won in Charleston last year.

A quarterfinalist at the French Open this year, the Russian will be looking to make the last eight for the seventh time this year.

Samsonova Ends Losing Streak

Liudmila Samsonova began her title defence on Tuesday with a straight sets win over Tamara Zidansek.

Samsonova had come into the contest on the back of five consecutive defeats, a series that began with a semifinal loss to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart. But the 23-year-old Russian ended the skid with a dominant performance on Tuesday.

Broken once in the first set, Samsonova broke Zidansek twice in each set to dispatch the Slovenian 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Samsonova, who defeated Belinda Bencic to win her only WTA title in Berlin last year, had come into the tournament with a main draw record of 5-10 in 2022. A semifinal appearance in Stuttgart, a quarterfinal in Adelaide-2 and a fourth round appearance in Indian Wells have been some of the highlights of her season so far.

Can she win another match in Berlin to reach her third quarterfinal of the season.

Kudermetova v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova’s form gives her the edge over the defending champion. Expect the World no. 24 to advance into the quarterfinals.
