Kerber v Hercog Head to Head

The two players first met on the tour back in the 2008 edition of WTA Maribor in Slovenia. That was their first of the six encounters that the two players have had since then.

Kerber presently leads by 4-2 although, she last met her Slovenian adversary back in the first round of the 2016 US Open. It is also worth noting that the last time Hercog registered a win over the German was in the 2011 WTA Monterrey.

Kerber’s Quest to Reach the Top

The German had a near-flawless run in 2018. She started the season as the World No. 22 and on the back of a sensational performance, she finished it as the World No. 2. The WTA Eastbourne semifinalist won the title in Sydney and followed it with a run to the semifinal in the Australian Open.

She also reached the penultimate rounds at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. She soared into the top 5 after winning the Wimbledon although, she failed to move past the third round in all of the events she played in.

As for the ongoing season, she started by playing in Sydney in an attempt to defend her title. However, she made it as far as the quarterfinal where she lost to Petra Kvitova.

Needless to mention, the German hasn’t had the best of start to the 2019 season. Given the quality of the players in her bracket, she is likely to face a stiff task of reaching the final rounds.

Hercog’s Unexciting Start to the Year

The Slovenian, who is currently ranked as the World No. 92, started her season in Auckland. There, she lost her first round fixture to Su-Wei Hsieh. Following that defeat, she travelled to Hobart as a qualifier. She had a similar run there, given that she lost her qualifying fixture to Olivia Rogowska.

Last year in Melbourne, she lost in the first round to Ekaterina Alexandrova. Hercog spent most of her season struggling to move past the first rounds. She did have one exceptional tournament – the WTA Istanbul, where she was the runner-up.

Kerber v Hercog – Who Will Win?

Kerber is set to start this match as the favourite to win. However, over the years, we have seen many top seeds succumb to early exits in Grand Slams. The German will be hoping to avoid that although, she will need to be precise and alert throughout.
