Coco Gauff v Xinyu Wang Head to Head
This will be their first meeting.
Solid Start For Gauff
Coco Gauff opened her grass season with a very solid start in Berlin taking down compatriot Ann Li. It was a good first set where Gauff dominated play with her athleticism. Li failed to find solutions despite being very aggressive.
The 2nd set featured Gauff complicating matters quite a bit by losing a break and failing to serve out the match twice. She did finish it off in the tiebreak but she allowed her opponent to get into a strong rhythm late in the 2nd set and almost paid a price for it.
Complications like that are not uncommon for Gauff. She is spectacular on return breaking opponents at a very high rate but she also gets broken quite often. Those issues persist on all surfaces so it’s nothing unusual. Gauff looked deplete after her Roland Garros exit but the young player vowed to come back stronger.
A good option would be some strong showings on the grass leading up to Wimbledon. She played well last year but ran into Angelique Kerber who proved better.
Make It Three For Wang in Berlin
Xinyu Wang already played 3 matches on the grass in Berlin. She had to go through the qualifiers to get into the main draw and she was able to do that. The first round paired her up against Tamara Korpatsch and it was a very strong comeback win for her.
The native German won the opening set fairly easily but Wang found solutions after that. She outplayed her opponent firmly in the next two sets to win it in three. Overall it’s been a good grass season for her after showing some promise last year.
The year overall is okay with a 14-12 record but she’s only getting used to playing some of the best in the world so the slow adaption is somewhat expected. Wang plays aggressive tennis and she can serve well but she can also misfired quite often. She will need to strike a strong balance to stand a chance against Gauff and even then it might not be enough.
Gauff v Wang Prediction and Tip
These two young stars of the game will carry tennis in the next decade and this is only the first of many battles. Gauff is far more talented and better at this stage. She moves on the court so well and it’s really hard to break her down. Li had some success but she was very strong while attacking.
I’m sure Wang could replicate the same level but it’s unclear for how long she can hold it. I don’t think it can last over two or three sets so I see Gauff winning this one comfortably. She will need to be more careful because Wang is better than Li.
