Karolina Pliskova v Cori Gauff Head to Head
It’s 1-0 to Pliskova; they last met in the 2021 Madrid Open where the Czech won in three sets.
Pliskova Finding her Rhythm
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova hasn’t had the most efficient of the season and a large part of it is due to her hand injury. Having spent the first three months of the year on the sidelines, she is now making her way back to the top – slowly and steadily.
She arrived in Berlin with a tally of 6-8 and a sole semifinal stint in Strasbourg to keep her spirits up. Having endured a litany of early exits in seven tournaments – all against players ranked outside the top 30, Pliskova has got the work cut out for her.
The number four seed started her campaign in Berlin with a three-set win over Kaia Kanepi; she served a double bagel after losing the first set in a tie-break. In the next round, the 30-year-old met Bianca Andreescu and fought valiantly to win 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7).
Armed with six grass finals – including the Wimbledon last season, Pliskova has a rich pedigree and experience to back her play. The only question is whether she can subdue the storm that is Coco Gauff.
Gauff, Clinical as Usual
18-year-old Cori Gauff may be untested on the grass surface but early indications state that she is just as good as here.
Fresh off the French Open runner-up feat – where she won all of her matches in straight sets before losing to Iga Swiatek in the final – the American has done well to keep the same tempo during the switch in courts.
This week, she is yet to drop a set as she moved past the likes of Ann Li and Xinyu Wang. Of course, Pliskova is bound to be a stern test for the number seven seed but you don’t get to be the best without taking on the best.
As the new World No. 13, Gauff is cruising high on confidence and has an impressive record against the top 20 players. She has the advantage of physical dexterity and fitness and will very well make things tricky for Pliskova.
Pliskova v Gauff Prediction and Tip
This is going to be a brilliant match that can swing either way. On her best day, Pliskova is difficult to beat. But given her recent form and fitness concerns, Gauff is superbly primed to carve yet another upset. Backing her is a good choice but on a more safer side, this can go well over 20.5 games.
