Bencic Overcomes Kalinskaya

Last year’s German Open finalist Belinda Bencic reached a second consecutive quarterfinal in Berlin on Thursday with a three-set win over Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya.

This was the second straight three-set win for the Swiss, who had knocked out Germany’s Jule Niemeier 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday.

The World no. 17 Bencic got the only break of the first set in the ninth game to go one-set up. But she was outplayed by Kalinskaya in the second set. The Russian broke Bencic twice in the set, while the Swiss could win just one game in the entire set.

Tables turned in the deciding set though, as Bencic raced to a 3-0 lead. Kalinskaya held serve in the fourth, but Bencic won the next three to complete a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory in an hour and 57 minutes.

The Olympic gold medallist will be wary of Kudermetova, who scored a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over Bencic in the quarterfinals of ‘s-Hertogenbosch last week. Bencic couldn’t break the Russian even once in the match, while the latter broke her serve thrice in that match. Can she overcome that setback and hand Kudermetova a defeat on Friday?

Kudermetova Knocks Out Defending Champion

After taking out the third seed Aryna Sabalenka in the first round, Russia’s Veronica Kudermetova knocked out defending champion Liudmila Samsonova in the second round of the competition.

Kudermetova, who had rallied to beat the Belarusian 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Tuesday, was stretched to three sets by Samsonova as well.

Broken in the very first game of the match, Kudermetova responded with an immediate break and then won three more games in a row to lead 4-1 in the first set. Samsonova didn’t break again and the World no. 24 took the first set.

In the second, Kudermetova seemed to be cruising at 0-4, but a spirited Samsonova fought back. The latter saved a match point on her serve at 4-5 (30-40) and then went on to take the set in the tiebreak.

The momentum had shifted but Kudermetova started the third well, racing to a 3-0 lead and then ensured that Samsonova doesn’t comeback the way she did in the second, breaking her compatriot for the second time in the set in the sixth game and then holding on for a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 victory.

The win was Kudermetova’s 25th win of the season. The French Open quarterfinalist has already featured in three finals this year in Melbourne, Dubai and Istanbul but hasn’t added to her only title she won in Charleston last year.
