Good Start For Cirstea
Sorana Cirstea can play really well on grass and she’s played really well on the surface in the past. This year she only played in one event on grass(Birmingham) and she’s still playing in it. A semifinal with a chance to go even further. We’ll see on Sunday because the rain stopped play on Saturday and it never resumed.
The level shown in Birmingham was finally something akin to the old Cirstea who was a superb player. Overall it’s been somewhat of a down year for her overall an 18-13 record. Notice how I said down year despite a solid record but her play has really been not that great.
She’s won matches because she is good but she can certainly do much better. The run in Birmingham includes wins over strong grass player such as Aleksandra Krunic and Donna Vekic so she’s certainly playing well.
If she opts for playing in Eastbourne she will be a player to watch. At Wimbledon as well. She’ll just hope to avoid Emma Raducanu because last year the native Brit ended her run there.

Expected Struggles for Kalinina
Anhelina Kalinina proved herself to be a proper clay specialist so it’s no wonder that she struggles on grass. She’s not played that much on it and generally, the playstyle is not that great for it. Her flat groundstrokes can work on this surface but she needs to be more aggressive.
The service is another thing that can give her trouble if she doesn’t improve. It’s just a part of her tennis career that needs to develop a bit more. Her only win came against Olivia Gadecki in Den Bosch and that’s not impressive at all.
In all fairness, she had very tricky draws facing a red-hot Alexandrova in Den Bosch (she won the event) and Daria Kasatkina in Berlin (a better player). It’s been a good year otherwise with a 14-11 record in what has largely been a breakout year for Kalinina.
She proved she can hang with the best and now it’s all about consistency and keep that level. Some wins on grass would help that cause but it will be tricky.
Cirstea v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
Kalinina bested Cirstea earlier in the year on hard courts and that’s a win to note. However, Cirstea was playing rather poor back then and she’s playing a bit better now. On grass, the Romanian player is certainly the better one and she should win this one.
There is a chance she might be fatigued after her Birmingham run but overall if she’s good to go and fully healthy she should beat Kalinina. I will back her to do so as I’m not yet trusting the Ukrainian’s level on grass. If she proves me wrong, fair play.
