World No. 80 Alejandro Tabilo of Chile cleared the qualifiers here in Mallorca to reach the main draw. It wasn’t the smoothest of the journeys as he survived a three-setter against Lucas Miedler and later knocked out Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.
The 25-year-old is on the prowl for his first main-draw win since the Munich Open in April where he reached the quarterfinal.
Since then, he has featured in three tournaments – Madrid Masters, ATP ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and ATP London. Tabilo lost in the opening rounds/qualifying in all three.
It is not entirely surprising given that Alejandro’s pedigree is superior only on the clay courts; this year he made it to his maiden ATP Tour final in Cordoba alongside being the runner-up in Santiago Challenger.
As for his record on grass, it stands at 0-2.

Bonzi in with Some Momentum
In stark contrast, Benjamin Bonzi is in a much better position than his Chilean counterpart.
Although he fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas last week in the Halle Open, he did reach the quarterfinal in Stuttgart the week before where he upset Feliciano Lopez and Arthur Rinderknech.
He is also the current World No. 56 with two Challenger trophies across different turfs – Cherbourg and Aix-en Provence. He was also a semifinalist in the Marseille Open.
The 26-year-old Frenchman is also 3-3 on grass and although it isn’t remarkably impressive, it is still better than Tabilo’s.
Over the course of his career, Bonzi has also registered wins over Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, and Lucas Pouille. He clearly has the potential for a deep run but is undone by his lack of consistency and momentum.
Bonzi v Tabilo Prediction and Tip
Bonzi is the clear favourite here. He has a superior pedigree and overall form that should help him prevail over Tabilo. He may be tested and pushed to three sets but at the end, he holds the advantage to get through.
