Taylor Fritz did not open the 2022 grass season in a good way losing both matches he played. First, it was Cinderella story Tim van Rijthoven who proved better in Den Bosch. Then it was Jack Draper who proved better in Queen’s and now the American is looking for his first win.
It’s a good chance for him as Thiago Monteiro is not known as a very good grass player despite the Brazilian being 3-0 on grass compared to Fritz’s 0-2. The American should theoretically be rather good on the surface although his sloppy movement at times really creates issues for him.
On grass, you need to be ready for every ball and Fritz is not. He’s 23-23 all time so there is something there. After all, he won this event in 2019 downing noted grass specialist Sam Querrey in the final. He’s probably dealing with a lack of matches because it’s been a while since he played consistent tennis.
Once he finds his rhythm (perhaps this week) he’ll be good to go for Wimbledon.

Monteiro Catching Fire On Grass
Thiago Monteiro is one of the biggest workers on the Tour. The Brazilian is a fairly solid tennis player albeit not one with a lot of natural talent.
He reached this level with persistent work which is something admirable. On grass this year he’s 3-0 after going through the qualifiers in Eastbourne. Then he downed Ugo Humbert in three sets which is a notable win for him. Monteiro is mostly a clay specialist but he will produce a good effort on all surfaces.
There are not many players who work harder than him and it’s paying off. It’s been a good year for him with a 25-19 record and this 3-0 run is impressive considering he is quite literally coming from clay. He played in Parma last week and going 3-0 without any practice is impressive.
I don’t care which level it is, that’s impressive. His game largely consists of his serve which is okay and his forehand which is a major weapon. It’s quite flat so it works on grass as level. Being a lefty doesn’t hurt either.
Fritz v Monteiro Prediction and Tip
If there is a match on grass that Frit should win it’s this one. Losing to Monteiro would be quite bad albeit not a soul-crushing one. Fritz is a very confident player and losses rarely shake him so I don’t expect him to approach this match any differently.
He should really win even if I’ve been impressed by Monteiro lately. There is just too much in terms of a quality difference between the players. I do expect Monteiro to make it quite hard. Maybe a 3-setter. I do think Fritz will get it done, it’s time.
