Dan Evans v Maxime Cressy Head to Head

They played three times before with Evans winning two. The most recent one in Munich on clay was won by Cressy.

Good Start for Evans

Beating Adrian Mannarino on grass is no easy feat but native Brit Dan Evans certainly made it look easy in Eastbourne. It was a straightforward match for Evans who dropped only 7 points behind his first serve. He also saved the only break point he faced while converting 2/3 he had to win the match in straight sets.

It’s been an interesting season for Evans on Grass. He’s 6-1 overall. Five of those wins came at the Nottingham challenger where he won the trophy. He lost to Matteo Berrettini in round one of Queen’s which was expected but he gave him some trouble.

The 6th one came here against Mannarino. Overall it’s been rather good for him as he generally is a rather solid grass player. Not the greatest but he employs more volleying than usual and it works for him. The slide is a nice addition as well.

All of that will be crucial for Cressy because there won’t be many chances against the American. They might even have a volleying duel.

Cressy Proving He Belongs

Maxime Cressy broke out in a major way last year making his way from outside of the top 100 into the top 100. He switched allegiance from France to America as well and it seems like that was a good choice. From there his game has slowly grown to a very solid level.

He’s near a top 50 debut thanks to a 19-17 season. On grass, it’s 3-2 with a loss to Dominic Sticker in Stuttgart to start it off. The Swiss is an excellent grass player so that can be forgiven. In Halle, it was Hubert Hurkacz who proved better but only just.

In Eastbourne, he took down Opleka but that was to be expected considering how weak the fellow American is on grass. Overall it’s been okay and he proved he belongs with the bet on grass. I do expect some struggles here due to the win in Eastbourne being a factor.

Evans v Cressy Prediction and Tip

Dan Evans beat Maxime Cressy twice but lost to him in Munich this year on clay. It’s an interesting matchup on paper as the two players play very similarly on grass. Evans becomes much more aggressive volleying more often than usual. The slice is something he will use a lot against Cressy who is very tall.

The American will volley as well but it comes down to his serve. It won’t be as effective in Eastbourne due to the win but it will keep Evans away from many break points. I think this is a close match, probably an over on games with Evans as the winner. The conditions work for him and I think that will matter in the end.
