Bencic Coming Off a Good Run

Belinda Bencic will be pleased with how her grass season went but a recent fitness scare has thrown her Wimbledon bid into potential jeopardy.

The 25-year-old Swiss was a quarterfinalist in the Libema Open (loss to Veronika Kudermetova) and later reached the final in Bett1Open Berlin where she withdrew in her final bout against Ons Jabeur trailing 3-6, 1-2.

The number 14 seed was next slated to play in Bad Homburg but she withdrew from the tournament – possibly to rest and get fit for Wimbledon.

With a title in Charleston 500, semifinal in the Miami Open, and quarters in Sydney and St. Petersburg, Belinda’s season so far has been eventful and consistent. She has proven herself across the three turfs and is inching closer to a top-10 re-entry.

Wang, in a Rut

Qiang Wang, age 30, is now World No. 144 – an absolute far cry from her career-best ranking of World No. 12.

She has lost the opening-round bouts in her last four WTA events – including the grass ones in Nottingham and Birmingham, respectively to Beatriz Haddad Maia and Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

It was a similar story on clay as she fell to Kaja Juvan and Jessica Pegula in Madrid and Paris.

The only time Wang managed to bag multiple wins in 2022 was in Guadalajara and Monterrey where she reached the semifinal and quarterfinal respectively. Thereafter, the wins came in the qualifying rounds.

Although inconsistent, Qiang has the experience to take on Bencic and possibly upset her. After all, she has beaten several top players over her career – including Maria Sakkari, Garbine Muguruza, Aryna Sabalenka, and Karolina Pliskova.

The Swiss is certainly in this league; it seems to be a matter of confidence for Wang to pull this off.

Bencic v Wang Prediction and Tip

Bencic will start as the favourite but a lot will depend on her fitness. Any missteps and Wang will be quick to capitalise on them. Expect an entertaining affair – one that may see over 20.5 games.

Tip: Bencic to Win, Over 20.5: 11/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
