Peniston Off to Dream Start

It’s been an incredible couple of weeks for Britain’s Ryan Peniston, who rose to fame with back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the first two ATP tournaments of his career.

First, Peniston knocked out French Open runner-up Casper Ruud and Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo to reach the last eight on his debut at Queen’s. The following week, he defeated Holger Rune and Pedro Martinez to make it to the quarterfinals in Eastbourne.

Although he was stopped from advancing to the semifinal by Filip Krajinovic in Queen’s and by Jack Draper in Eastbourne, Peniston has made heads turn with his performances.

Overall, the 26-year-old is 8-4 on grass this year, having also made it to the last eight in Surbiton and Nottingham Challengers.

A cancer survivor, Peniston is currently ranked No. 147 in the world. He will be hoping to make a dream Grand Slam debut as well. Given his form, no one will take him lightly. While he will fancy his chances against Laaksonen, he could be up against 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.

Peniston has won four Futures titles and has finished runner-up three times at the Challenger level, with the most recent of those being in Ostrava in May.

Laaksonen Will Find the Going Tough

Henri Laaksonen will be making his second main draw appearance at Wimbledon. The 30-year-old Swiss, who failed to make it past the qualifiers on six occasions at the grass court major, made his debut in 2017, only to lose the opener to Lukas Rosol.

Laaksonen is 5-9 this season and is yet to win a match on grass. The World no. 95 was beaten by Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round of the Ilkley Challenger and he couldn’t find a way past John Millamn in the first qualifying round in Eastbourne.

Grass has been his least preferred surface and that match against Rosol remains his only match on the surface at the top level.

It will be interesting to see if he can pick his first win on grass on Monday, although the odds would be stacked against him.

Peniston v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip

Ryan Peniston has generated a lot of interest, leading up to the major. The Briton will get a lot of support during the competition. He is expected to win the first round match with ease.
