Between the two of them, they have a total of 31 Grand Slam titles and a rivalry that goes as far as 2006.
On one hand, Djokovic is looking to maintain his perfect record in majors – he won the Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year. On the other hand, Nadal is looking to win his first Australian Open title since 2009.
As for the head to head tally, this will be their 53rd encounter on the tour. Djokovic presently leads by 27-25, with his last win over Nadal coming in the semifinal of last year’s Wimbledon.
Interestingly, in their last 10 meetings since 2015, the Serbian has been victorious eight times, while Nadal has managed only two wins.
The two players have enjoyed a pretty solid run in Melbourne, especially Nadal. The Spaniard has not dropped even a single set on his way to the final and throughout the competition, he has been highly clinical.
Meanwhile, Djokovic was dragged to a couple of four setters but nothing he couldn’t manage.
The world number’s path to the final has been a tad sketchier than Nadal’s but if there were any doubts about his fitness, they were dispelled in the semi-final win over Lucas Pouille. Nadal, on the other hand, has been on a bit of a rampage, dropping not a single game en route this final.
