Sakkari v Goerges Head to Head

The two players have met each other only twice so far and on both the occasions, Goerges won in straight sets. Both of those meetings took place in 2018 itself and interestingly, one of the matches was played right here, in the first round of WTA St. Petersburg Open.

Back then, the German dispatched an inexperienced Sakkari 6-2, 7-6(5).

A Mixed Start for Sakkari

Sakkari has started her season on a rather uneventful note but given that it is still too early, she can very well move into the top 20, especially with a good showing at the St. Petersburg Open.

She started her season in Hobart, where she lost her opening match to Magda Linette in three sets. She then travelled to Melbourne for the Australian Open where she reached the third round to lose to Ashleigh Barty. It was a good run by the 23-year-old Greek, who dispatched Jelena Ostapenko in the first round there.

As for her form last season, it was quite erratic marked by a couple of spells of good performances. For most of the time, she failed to make it past the early rounds except for a few exceptions. The most notable of these exceptions was her stint in San Jose, where she was the runner-up.

Goerges Loses her Rhythm

The German started her season on a remarkable note by successfully defending her title in Auckland. She was well placed to break into the top 10 again but unfortunately, she slipped further in the rankings.

For the Australian Open, she was seeded 14th but lost in the first round to the eventual semifinalist Danielle Collins. Owing to that, she is now the World No. 16.

Nonetheless, Goerges is a player who is known to deliver interesting results time and again. She reached the semifinal at the Wimbledon last season and later, she moved on to win the Luxembourg Open. Over the course of her career, she has also defeated many top players like Caroline Wozniacki, Karolina Pliskova, Garbine Muguruza among others.

Sakkari v Goerges – Who Will Win?

Goerges will start this match as the favourite to win. She has the experience on her side although, her shaky form is something that the Greek could capitalise on. Sakkari will be heading into this fixture, keen on avoiding last year’s repeat again. It is a deja vu for the two players and it should make for an interesting match to follow.
