The second round of the 2019 WTA St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy will feature the second seed Kiki Bertens against the Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure on Thursday.

Kiki Bertens v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head
The two ladies have met only twice prior to this match. Both of those meetings took place in 2015 and Bertens won them both. She is presently leading by 2-0 against the Belgian.
Bertens Starts Off Well
The 27-year-old Dutch may have started her season on an eventful note, but she still managed to move up in the rankings. After the Australian Open (where Bertens lost in the second round to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova), she became the World No. 8 – her best singles ranking.
So far this season, the second seed has had only one memorable run, which came in the WTA Sydney. She was a semifinalist there where she succumbed to the local favourite Ashleigh Barty in three sets. The second seed also played in Brisbane prior to that but lost in the second round.
Bertens is definitely a strong player, given her performance in the previous season. She won the tournament in Charleston, along with the Cincinnati Open and Korea Open.
Bonaventure’s Best Run of the Year
The Belgian is currently the World No. 131, courtesy of her uneventful spells on the ITF circuit in the previous season. There were a few exceptions like the WTA Auckland and the Grand Slams but unfortunately, she never made it past the qualifying/early rounds.
She started her season on a similar note. The 24-year-old qualified for the main draw in Melbourne but lost to Sachia Vickery in the opener. Bonaventure also played in an ITF event in France the next week but didn’t have much luck there either.
However, in St. Petersburg, she has already outperformed her recent results. As a qualifier, she made it to the main draw. In the opening match, she defeated Katerina Siniakova in straight sets to reach the second round in a WTA event for the first time since July last year.
Bertens v Bonaventure Tips & Predictions
Bertens will start this match as the overwhelming favourite to win. She has the experience and momentum while Bonaventure is low on both. However, the Belgian may join the long list of players who have delivered stunning upsets from a position of apparent weakness. This will be an interesting match to see where the Dutch should be able to win comfortably.
