Elina Svitolina v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

In two previous matches, Ostapenko has won both including at the 2017 Wimbledon where she was a 6-3, 7-6 winner and the Miami Open last year where she won in two tie-breakers. However, given the current form, it would be interesting to see how Ostapenko goes.

Svitolina Resumes Play after Australian Open

It’s been the kind of start that Svitolina would have wanted after a brilliant end to the previous season in which she went on to win the WTA Finals. Sure, she lost in the opener at the Brisbane Open in three curious sets, but she came back strongly to make it to the Australian Open quarter-finals.

There, she had a couple of tough three-setters against the likes of Shuai Zhang and Madison Keys, which she came through to make it to the last eight where she faced Naomi Osaka. Osaka was in the form of her own career as she blitzed past Svitolina but the Ukrainian would have been soundly pleased to have made it that far at the Australian Open, two times in a row.

The big question now is for Svitolina to keep delivering those performances with a level of consistency that had taken her to the number three spot in the world in 2017.

She had a first round bye in this competition.

The Fight is Real for Ostapenko

Since making it to the third round at the last year’s US Open, the 2017 French Open winner is in her 10th tournament – ninth if you discount the Fed Cup – and she is yet to win two matches in a row in a single competition.

First round losses at the Wuhan Open and Hong Kong Open finished her previous season before she began 2019, admittedly knowing she wasn’t a 100%, and losing her openers at Shenzhen, Sydney and the Australian Open. What makes it worse for the Latvian is the first two of those defeats were so one-sided that it would have been easy to feel demoralised.

A win over Kristina Mladenovic at St. Petersburg helped but she lost her second round match there before registering a victory at the Fed Cup and then beating Mihaela Buzarnescu in three sets in the opening match here at the Qatar Open.

Svitolina v Ostapenko Predictions & Tips

It comes as no big surprise that Svitolina is odds on favourite at 2/7 to win this one, while Ostapenko is 27/10  (Unibet) to enter the quarter-final. We think that while Svitolina will go on to win this one, it could end up being a fighting encounter with over 20.5 games in the encounter – 5/6 at bet365 .

You can watch & bet on  Elina Svitolina v Jelena Ostapenko on Wednesday, February 13, at 3.30 pm local time.
