Daniil Medvedev v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Head to Head

The two men have been twice met before with honours even so far. Tsonga won in the quarter-final of Montpellier two years ago whilst, much more recently, Medvedev beat the Frenchman in the semi-final of the Brisbane Open at the start of January.

Medvedev, Adding the Consistency Layer?

22-year old Medvedev will go in to Friday’s match full of confidence, buoyed by the knowledge that he won the Sofia Open last week, his fourth ATP senior career title.

Seeded fifth for the tournament this week, he has enjoyed two straightforward matches in Rotterdam this week, beating Jeremy Chardy in the round of 32, and then seeing of Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 7-5 in the last 16.

Tsonga represents a step-up in level, but the 23-year old Russian will go into their contest knowing that he has already beaten the French player some 6 weeks ago.

Tsonga – The Rankings Ascent Begins

Tsonga is on the comeback trail after missing most of 2018 with knee surgery, and there are signs that he is starting to get back to the sort of form that made him a top-20 player for many years.

He began the year by reaching the semi-final at Brisbane, where he lost to his opponent on Friday, and although he was comprehensively outplayed by Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, few could live with the Serb at that tournament.

His renaissance gained further momentum in Montpellier last week where he won his 17th ATP title, beating compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the final. He has already risen back to 140 and will be hoping a good run in Rotterdam will push him even further up the rankings.

Medvedev v Tsonga Predictions & Tips

Medvedev starts Friday’s match at 4/5  (bet365) on as favourite, based on his higher world ranking and most recent victory over Tsonga. However, that came at the start of the year when Tsonga was just starting his comeback, and he has had a month of practice and playing to improve. 6/5 for the Frenchman looks a good price.

Both men won a tournament last week – this time around something has to give.

You can watch & bet on Daniil Medvedev v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday, February 15. The match will be held from 1.30 pm BST onwards.
