Angelique Kerber v Hseih Su-wei Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the last 16 of the Australian Open in 2018, when Kerber came through a three-set battle 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Kerber – A By-Word for Inconsistency?

Kerber can be an infuriating player to watch for her many supporters. The three-time Grand Slam champion can be the best in the world on her day, and yet can have periods where form and confidence seem to desert her.

The reigning Wimbledon champion was seen by many as having a great chance to win in Melbourne this year but, having breezed through the first three rounds, was knocked out in straight sets by the virtually unknown American Danielle Collins.

Then last week she reached the semi-finals in Qatar, only to lose to the eventual winner Elise Mertens, ranked some 10 places below her in the WTA world rankings.

And evidence of how she can struggle came in her second round match in Dubai on Tuesday, where she was made to fight to beat the world number 83 Dalila Jakupović 7-6, 6-3.

Hseih – Player with Unusual Playing Style

Hseih is renowned on the WTA tour for her unusual playing style. She plays with both hands on the racquet on both the forehand and the backhand style, meaning that she ends up hitting the ball very flat. At the same time, she can open up wide angles on the court, which can make it very difficult for her opponent to judge where her shots are going to land.

This unorthodox approach has brought her a fair degree of success, particularly in doubles, where she is twice a Grand Slam champion. However, she has had her moments on the singles court as well, having claimed three senior WTA titles.

Now aged 33, her best days are probably behind her but, given that her current world ranking of 31 is not far off her best ever, then she must be considered a dangerous opponent for Kerber.

She has already sent out the 10th seeded Anastasija Sevastova in her opening round match, winning 6-4, 6-2, before crushing Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the round two to make it to this meeting with Kerber.

Kerber v Hseih Predictions & Tips

Kerber will start the match as odds-on favourite and, if she shows her best form, should have too much for her Taiwanese opponent. However, Hseih’s game is unpredictable, and, if the German has one of her off days, the underdog could still pull off a surprise.
