Brooksby Progresses after Schwartzman Retirement

It took Brooksby all of 44 minutes to advance from his second round match after his opponent Diego Schwartzman retired from their encounter because of an injury.

Brooksby had won the first set 6-1 after breaking Schwartzman twice in the encounter before the Argentine opted out of the match.

This follows a hard-fought victory over Fabio Fognini in the first round where Brooksby was made to overcome a one-set deficit. Against his Italian opponent, Brooksby had dropped the opening set in a tie-breaker before clinching the next two relatively easily 6-1, 6-3.

The American, in his first tournament of the season, looks to have put an underwhelming finish to the previous season behind him after having lost four successive ATP matches in a row. The last time he won one in 2022 was in tournament in Seoul where he made the semifinals.

Can he do that here too?

Halys Beats Ben to Build Momentum

Halys stood ranked 64th in the world at the start of this tournament – his career-best ranking – and two victories in, he seems to have built on his momentum rather nicely.

The Frenchman, who had pushed Novak Djokovic in the Adelaide tournament last week, entered his round two match against Ben Shilton on the back of a 6-3, 6-4 rout of Alex Molcan in his opener.

And much like was the case in the first round, Halys defeated Shelton 6-3, 6-2 to reach his maiden ATP quarterfinals. The match lasted just over an hour and saw Halys face no break-points even as he got better of his opponent’s serve three times.

Halys will now face an opponent who is a few ranks higher than him and does well in hardcourt tournaments, but with the kind of form the Frenchman is in, we could be in for a humdinger.

Brooksby v Halys Prediction and Tip

Brooksby is a favourite here at 4/6 but we will have to look at Halys as a potential option for a surprise in this encounter. At 6/5, Halys is a solid punt to go for.
