Naomi Osaka v Danielle Collins Head to Head
Osaka and Collins have met only once on the tour – in the 2018 China Open. Osaka won that match 6-1, 6-0.
Osaka’s Bid for a Second Indian Wells Title
Indian Wells is where it all began for Osaka. This is where she won her first singles title of her career in 2018 and eventually moved on to win the US Open later that year.
In fact, Osaka’s persistence took her all the way through to the Australian Open earlier this year too. That Grand Slam winning run came on the back of superb wins against Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, and Petra Kvitova.
At the same time, the Japanese has had a couple of shocking losses too. In Brisbane, she succumbed to Lesia Tsurenko in the semifinal while in Dubai a couple of weeks back, she lost to Kristina Mladenovic in the round of 32.
The top seed is also playing with a new coach, parting ways with Sascha Bajin in February. It was with Bajin that Osaka managed to win two majors and a Premier Mandatory event. With a new change in dynamics now, it will be interesting to see how she fares here.
Collins Looking Confident
The 25-year-old had a career-defining run in Melbourne this season when she reached the semifinal after defeating the likes of Angelique Kerber, Caroline Garcia, and Julia Goerges.
She couldn’t follow this performance with an equally mesmerizing run, mainly because she hasn’t been that active on the tour. She played in Fed Cup where she defeated Daria Gavrilova and followed that with a first-round loss in the Mexican Open.
Just like Osaka, Collins too found some success in Indian Wells last season when she reached the fourth round. Shortly after that, she reached the semifinal in the Miami Open – a run that propelled her into the top 60. This time around, she started her campaign with a straight-set win over Kirsten Flipkens.
Naomi Osaka v Danielle Collins Predictions & Tips
Osaka will start here as the favourite to win. However, Collins is a hard-hitter, aggressive player who can very well give Osaka a fight for her money. This will be a battle of grit and determination, rather than experience.
Tip: Collins to win a set: 10/11 (Bet365)
