Stan Wawrinka v Steve Johnson Head to Head

The two men have met three times before, with their first two encounters coming at Grand Slam events, the French Open in 2015, and the Australian Open two years later. Wawrinka won on both those occasions, but it was Johnson who emerged triumphant from their match on clay at the Rome Masters last year.

Wawrinka, Battling Back the World Rankings

Three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka has had a terrible past two years with a series and elbow injuries that saw him miss large chunks of both seasons.

As a consequence, the man once ranked as three in the world saw his world rankings plummet close to 300. He is now starting to fight back, and reached his first ATP final in Rotterdam in 20 months, before losing to Gaël Monfils.

He will be looking for another good showing in Acapulco, and, having beaten Johnson’s compatriot qualifier Ryan Harrison in the first round, will be hoping to repeat the feat on Wednesday. He defeated Harrison 6-4, 7-6 in his opening round encounter.

Johnson, Seventh Seed Looking for Form

World number 34 Johnson has not enjoyed a good year so far, failing to get beyond the second round in any of the singles’ tournaments he has entered so far. Most recently he was beaten by Radu Albot of Moldova, ranked 18 places below him in the world rankings in Delray Beach last week.

He in turn will be hoping for a boost in Mexico ahead of the big American tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami that are yet to come next week.

Wawrinka v Johnson Predictions & Tips

Despite being the unseeded player of the two, Wawrinka is the odds-on favourite with the bookmakers at 1/3 on. Johnson is priced at 11/4, and, given his current form, and the underlying ability of his Swiss opponent, he must start as underdog. Wawrinka will be 10/11 with Betfair to win this match in straight sets.

You can watch & bet on Stan Wawrinka v Steve Johnson on Thursday, February 27th. The match is scheduled for 12 am BST tomorrow.
