Donna Vekić v Christina McHale Head to Head

The pair have met once before, four years ago in qualifying for the Madrid Open, with McHale winning on that occasion 6 -3, 6-2. However, Vekić was barely out of the junior ranks at that stage, so that match may not be a good indication of current form and potential.

Vekić, Eyeing the World Top 20

Two-time WTA singles title winner Vekić has made steady progress up the world rankings and is now at a career high of 25.

The next step for her is to crack the top twenty, and she will feel that that is within her grasp, having already reached one final this year, the St. Petersburg Open, where she was finally beaten by Kiki Bartens of the Netherlands.

She will be looking for a good run in Mexico and then to continue her form into the Masters Events in Indian Wells and Miami next month. She had little trouble in disposing of Misaki Doi of Japan in the first round, and will be looking for a similarly convincing win over McHale.

McHale, An Aggressive Baseline Hitter

World number 144 McHale is known as aggressive baseline hitter and for her impressive court coverage, but has suffered from inconsistency.

Ranked as high as 25 in the world in 2016, the year she won her solitary WTA senior title in Japan, she is now languishing down at 144, and unlikely to pose a sustained threat to Vekić unless the Croatian has a bad day.

She will though have taken heart from the way she beat local Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sánchez in the first round 6-3, 7-6.

Vekić v McHale Predictions & Tips

Vekić will start favourite for this match, probably odds-on, reflecting her superior world ranking and current form. McHale has been a finalist in Acapulco before, but that was five years ago, and there is little in her recent performances to suggest she is likely to repeat that this week. Vekic is 10/11 with bet365 to win it in straight sets.
