Rafael Nadal v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

The players have met five times on the ATP circuit with Nadal leading 3-2.

Nadal Looking for Deep Run

World number two Rafael Nadal returns to Acapulco after being a losing finalist to American Sam Querrey in 2017. Nadal will be looking for a good run at Acapulco as he looks to acclimatize himself to the outdoor hard courts before the Sunshine Masters starting next week at Indian Wells, followed by Miami.

Nadal is playing his first tournament since the Australian Open final loss to Novak Djokovic and there were glimpses of both rust and brilliance in his opener against Mischa Zverev. Nadal displayed his customary powerful hitting and that was sufficient to put the older Zverev under pressure.

The Spaniard with a revamped serve and forehand at the Australian Open that saw him make inroads at the tournament, will be hoping it serves him well again in the weeks to come. Nadal mentioned that he needs to improve his game from his opener with some tricky next round opponents ahead.

Nadal has won the Mexican Open twice but both were when the tournament was on clay, before the surface was changed over to hard court.

Can Kyrgios Find More Consistency?

Australian Nick Kyrgios remains among the most talented and unpredictable players on the tour. Once billed to be the leader of the next generation of tennis, Kyrgios has not managed to match his talent with consistency. Injuries and his temperament have plagued his short career thus far, and his attitude and interest have sometime been questioned.

The Australian has defeated Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in their first meetings which is a rare phenomenon. With a very strong serve, a monstrous forehand and innovative shot making, Kyrgios sets himself up for the big stage and can defeat the best on his day. He has however also had many disappointing losses throughout his career.

Kyrgios had a premature end to 2018 and the current season thus far has been a mix of indifferent form and elbow and knee troubles. Before this tournament, he had only won one match all season. Kyrgios beat Italian Andreas Seppi in straight sets in his first round match here.

Nadal v Kyrgios Predictions & Tips

It has been an interesting match-up with Kyrgios winning the first time they met on the Wimbledon grass courts in 2014. Nadal had some very convincing wins thereafter on clay and at the Beijing Open indoors. However, on the hard courts of Cincinatti in 2017, Kyrgios dominated the Spaniard.

Kyrgios will look to put pressure on Nadal from the beginning, with his powerful serve and game. Nadal who looked very sharp for most of the Australian Open will be hoping to continue similar form and confidence. What always remain unknown is the version of Kyrgios that shows up on the day. Expect a well contested match with Nadal winning in two tight sets.

Betfair’s  offering 8/11 for a 2-0 win for Nadal.
