Stan Wawrinka v Dan Evans Head to Head
The pair have met once before on the senior ATP Tour in 2016 at the US Open when Wawrinka won a Round of 32 match in five tough sets. Things have changed dramatically both since then, so one cannot be sure if that result would have much of a bearing on this encounter.
Wawrinka – Climbing Back towards the Top
After an injury ravaged couple of years, Wawrinka is continuing his climb back to the top of the men’s game, and has already made the finals in the last two events at which he has competed – at the Rotterdam Open, and then last week in Acapulco at the Mexican Open.
He lost both – to Gael Monfils in Rotterdam and Nick Kyrgos in Mexico last week – but they provide clear and tangible evidence of a return to form for the three time Grand Slam winner.
Wawrinka is now back up to 40 in the world and a good run here, and at the following Masters event in Miami, will help him climb to the type of world rankings which will begin to see him seeded again for events like this.
Evans fighting back from drugs ban
Evans is another man fighting back up the rankings, but for completely different reasons, having almost thrown his tennis career away after being tested positive for the use of cocaine at the Barcelona Open in 2017.
That landed him with a 12-month ban from the sport which meant he was not allowed to even practice on an official court until the sanctions were lifted.
He has fought his way back though, and reached his first ATP final in Delray Beach before losing to Romania’s Radu Albot eleven days ago. Back in the world’s top 100, he takes his place on the opposite side of the net to Wawrinka after coming through qualifying.
Wawrinka v Evans Predictions & Tips
Wawrinka will start favourite, probably odds-on, because of his higher ranking, and greater experience and track record (bet365) . However, Evans is playing well, and this is unlikely to be an easy match for either men, and could well go to three sets.
