Johanna Konta v Hseih Su-wei Head to Head

The pair have met five times before on the senior WTA tour, with Konta leading their head-to-head series by three matches to two, including their last encounter at the Rome Masters last year. This though will be only their second meeting on a hard court – and, for the record, Konta won that match as well, back in Vancouver in 2013.

Konta Looking to Regain her Form

Konta has had an indifferent couple of years, after struggling to rediscover the form that once saw her ranked four in the world. Injury, a loss of confidence, and several changes of coach have ensued, and now she is looking to string a few decent results in a tournament together.

She has had a mixed start to the year, exiting early in Brisbane and Australia, before helping her country in the Federation Cup to qualify for a World Group play-off. She then reached the quarter-final in Mexico before losing to Donna Vekic of Croatia.

In the first round here she disposed of Pauline Parmentier of France easily enough, but Su-wei is a sterner test.

Su-wei, Strong in Both Doubles and Singles

Su-wei is a former number one ranked doubles player, who has won Grand Slam titles at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. However, she also knows her way around a singles’ court, as is evidenced by her three WTA titles, and the fact that, at the age of 33, she is still playing near to her highest ever world ranking.

She has had a good 2019 so far, reaching the semi-finals in Auckland, and pushing Naomi Osaka all the way in a tight three-setter in Melbourne. She also got to the semi-finals in Dubai, before being eventually edged out by Petra Kvitova.

A good run in Indian Wells will help build on those previous results.
