Dominic Thiem v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, with Thiem winning on each occasion. Their first match came in the 2017 Australian Open when Thiem won in four sets, whilst their second encounter came a year later in the Davis Cup. This time the Austrian, playing on his favourite surface of clay, thrashed the Australian in three sets, with Thompson winning just four games.

Thiem, Warming up for Clay Court Season

The 25-year old Austrain comes into Indian Wells knowing that he is unlikely to win the tournament. He is predominanty a clay court player, and eight of his eleven senior ATP titles have come on thtst surface.

That is not to discount his chances altogether – his most recent tournament win came on the hard courts of St. Petersburg last year, although that tournament was played indoors compared to the current event in California.

However, the 2018 beaten finalist at Roland Garros will hope that a good run in Indian Wells can give him confidence which he can take in to the clay court season, when he will be hoping to go one better at the French Open this year.

Because, it’s been a rotten start to the year for Thiem, who has lost seven of the 10 matches he’s played in, including a first round shock exit at ATP Rio last week. Will the turnaround happen?

Thompson – Dangerous Opponent for Thiem

24-year old Thompson is probably not the sort of opponent that Thiem would have chosen for his first match this week.

The Australian, currently ranked 77 in the world, spends most of his time competing on the junior circuits, where he has enjoyed a fair measure of success, predominantly on hard surfaces such as are to be found in California. And he has has the boost of a recent quarter-final appearance in New York behind him.

However, he had to endure an epic struggle to get this far in the tournament, and only got past Frederico Delbonis of Argentina in the first round after a tense third set tie-break was used to decide the match.

Thiem v Thompson Predictions & Tips

Thiem is the odds-on favourite to win at 4/11, whilst you can get 12/5 for Thompson (bet365) . This is based on world rankings and relative strengths, but those wanting to back Thompson can take heart from the fact that the hard corts are more to his liking than Thiem’s.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (William Hill)
