Marin Cilic v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head
There have been two matches between Cilic and Lajovic before this and the Croat has won both of them. It began with a 6-4, 7-5 win at Zagreb in 2014 before the 2016 Miami Masters encounter in which Cilic was a 6-4, 6-1 winner.
Below-Par Start for Cilic
For a player who is coming off back to back decent seasons, one whose best ranking was number three in the world and for someone who is a former Grand Slam winner and was an Australian Open runner-up as recently as in 2018, his showing so far might not have enthused him so far.
After a couple of matches at the Kooyong Exhibition tournament, Cilic struggled to make fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year where he was sent packing by Roberto Bautista-Agut. And if that wasn’t quite up to the scratch, his opening round defeat in Dubai at the hands of Gael Monfils would have added to those woes.
Cilic is also coming off a second and third round exit at the previous two Indian Wells Masters competitions.
Now while the world number 11 would love to kick-start this competition with something of a more positive start than he has seen all year, his real test will lie towards the latter part – where the likes of Denis Shapovalov, Kei Nishikori and Roger Federer lie in his wait.
A solid beginning might send in the right message to his opponents.

Having made the quarter-final at the Doha Open earlier in his first tournament of 2019, lot was expected out of Lajovic. Suddenly, things went kaput as he went out in round one of both, the Sydney International and the Australian Open and since then he has won just two matches spread across five tournaments.
In fact, his first round win at this Indian Wells Masters against Taro Daniel broke a four-match sequence of defeats. This included a Davis Cup loss to Denis Istomin, and first round exits at Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco, none of which came against a top 10 player either.
And while he would be relieved to have changed things around in the first round here, this is a very stern test in the offing for the 45th-ranked Serb.
