McDonald Hasn’t Won on Clay This Season

While McDonald has done well reasonably well in 2023, all of those solid performances have come in hardcourt competitions for the American.

For instance he made the third round at both, the Australian Open and Miami Masters, while also winning three successive matches at the Delray Beach Open to enter the semifinals.

On clay, however, McDonald has never been at his best and this can be seen from his experiences in the two such tournaments he’s played so far.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, McDonald was dumped out in the first round by qualifier Ivan Gakhov in a hard-fought three-setter. This was followed by his appearance at the Barcelona Open where fellow American Ben Shelton got the better of him in straight sets.

Now coming up against a clay-court specialist will make life that much more difficult for McDonald.

Zapata Miralles Hovering Around His Career-Best

A qualifier at this tournament last season, Zapata Miralles has made the main draw thanks to his vastly-improved ranking – he was ranked 133rd in May 2022 and enters the Madrid Masters this year just a rank adrift of his career-best ranking of 41st.

This has been down to his performances on the clay court circuit, including his solidity in Buenos Aires and Rio. At both tournaments which were played earlier this year in February, the Spaniard made the semifinal, losing to Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie respectively.

More recently, he was a quarterfinalist in Estoril and while his performances at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open weren’t up to the scratch, he will enter this match feeling relatively good about himself.

More so because he will be up against a player who has struggled on clay and even in the overall analysis is ranked lower. Surely should be a golden chance for Zapata Miralles to win his first ever match in an ATP 1000 tournament.

Mackenzie McDonald v Bernabe Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Zapata Miralles can be expected to rule this contest and win it in straight sets given the kind of say he has had on clay.
