Gael Monfils v Philipp Kohlscreiber Head to Head

The two men have met no fewer than 15 times before on tour, with Monfils leading their personal series by thirteen matches to two.

Those looking for pointers for this match will want to note that Kohlschreiber’s two victories came on grass and clay, whereas Monfils, who has won their last 4 matches, has triumphed over his opponent on all surfaces.

Monfils, Eyeing Another Masters Quarter-Final

Monfils comes into the match having an advantage over his opponent of a rest day behind him. He played on Monday, whereas Kohlschreiber’s match was delayed until Tuesday because of heavy rain. He also exercised comparatively little effort in his third round defeat of Spain’s Albert-Ramos Vinolas, in a match that lasted for just 15 games.

He won 73% of his first serve points in that match, 55% on second serve, and converted 5 out of 13 break points, and a similar level of efficiency against Kohlschreiber may be too much for the German.

The 32-year old Frenchman will be confident of reaching his second Indian Wells quarter-finals; if he does so it will be his first appearance in the last eight of a Masters tournament since Canada in 2016.

Kohlschreiber, Desert Conqueror of Djokovic

The world number 39 has been having an excellent week in California. Having beaten Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France in the first round, he next met Nick Kyrgios, fresh from his triumph in Mexico, in the round of 64, beating the Australian in straight sets.

Much better was to come in his rain-delayed match against the world number one and tournament favourite Novak Djokovic on Tuesday, as he dumped the Serb out of the Indian Wells Masters beating him 6-4, 6-4, breaking a seven match losing streak against him for the 35-year old German.

Particularly impressive was the way he won 72% of his first serve points, and saved four out of the five break points against him. He will need to match that level of performance against Monfils.

Monfils v Kohlschreiber Predictions & Tips

Monfils will start the odds-on favourite according to the bookmakers, with Kohlschreiber an outsider (bet365). The German has had an excellent tournament, but beating Djokovic will have taken a lot out of him, and he will find it very tough against a fully rested Monfils.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 8/5 (betway)
