Can Hurkacz Continue with his Dream Run?

Ranked 67th in the world coming into this tournament, Hurkacz had had a few bright spots this season including a title win at the Canberra Challenger, but nothing would compare to a fourth round appearance at the Indian Wells Masters.

What makes it even more special is the way he’s got there. Having already beaten Donald Young and Australian Open semi-finalist Lucas Pouille to make it to the round three, he was down a set and a break in the second set against Kei Nishikori in the third round.

Nishikori, ranked seventh in the world, looked like he was on his way to another easy win before Hurkacz came back strongly to take the match into the third set and then complete the victory.

Interestingly, the Polish player had defeated Nishikori just a fortnight or so ago as well, at the Dubai Open before falling to Stefanos Tsitispas. So, it wasn’t a case of Nishikori getting surprised by a virtual nobody – just a matter of Hurkacz being too good.

A First Hat-Trick of the Year for Shapovalov?

Not a hat-trick of titles but a hat-trick of wins. Yep, Shapovalov is yet to win three in a row this season at the ATP level – although he did win back to back matches for Canada in the Davis Cup and then his opener at Montpellier immediately after that.

For a Next-Gen star, it would need Shapovalov to get going and move into the quarter-finals here. Only twice before this has he made it as far as that stage in a Masters competition.

Making the qualification for the fourth round even more special is that it consists of a win over Marin Cilic in his previous match, having lost in their first meeting last year.

And well, if he does win it, fans would also hope for a repeat of his rap performance from the previous encounter.
