Thiem in Seventh Heaven after Indian Wells Win
Thiem comes into this tournament off the back of picking up his 12th senior ATP title in Indian Wells, having beaten Roger Fderer in the final last Sunday. That has propelled him back to equal his highest ever world ranking of four, and he will be looking to consolidate that with another run into the latter stages of the tournament here.
Seeded three for the event due to the absence of Rafael Nadal, the big question will be how much have his exertions in California taken out of him. History suggests that it is difficult to go deep into both tournaments because of the physical and mental toll exacted.
What makes it interesting for him is his opponent has had a brilliant run himself at the Indian Wells Masters. That could just level terms for the two.
Hurkacz has continued California form into Florida
Due to the prolonged rain in Miami, Hurkacz has been only one of a handful of players so far to have completed their first round match, beating Matteo Berrettini in straight sets on Wednesday.
That was the latest in a series of impressive results which has seen him beat Kei Nishikori twice in successive tournaments including at Dubai, as well as reach the quarter-finals in Indian Wells.
He showed in that event that he is not scared to go toe-to-toe with the biggest names in the sport, so, if Thiem is feeling any ill-effects after his efforts in California, he will be ready to take full advantage. That said, the same could be the reason for Hurkacz to struggle as well, given he’s been playing for some time.
