Roger Federer v John Isner Head to Head

Federer and Isner have met each other seven times on the ATP Tour. The Swiss leads by 5-2 with their last meeting coming in the 2015 Paris Masters. In that match, Isner clinched his second win over Federer in three sets.

Isner’s Breathtaking Run in Miami

Since his win over Federer back in 2015, Isner has achieved a lot on the ATP circuit. He became the World No. 8 last season – his single best ranking and also won the ATP Atlanta twice, along with the Miami Masters title.

This year, he started his title defense against Lorenzo Sonego and later defeated the likes of Albert Ramos Vinolas and Kyle Edmund. In the quarters, he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut following which, he dispatched the Canadian qualifier Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The American has made it to the final without dropping a single set. In fact, nine of the 10 sets he has played in Miami have been decided by tie-breakers – a feat that is quintessentially Isner.

Apart from this, he has also made it to three other semifinals on the tour this year in New York, Delray Beach, and Acapulco.

A Chance for Federer to Write History

A few years ago, the Swiss was drastically struggling with his form and was forced to miss most of the 2016 season owing to his knee surgery. That time, many critics speculated whether Federer can attain that same level of greatness once again.

Of course, he has moved on to silence his critics in style, winning three Grand Slams and three Masters titles, in addition to a few other titles. At the start of the month, he won his 100th singles ATP title on the tour, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in Dubai.

Most recently, he was the runner-up in the Indian Wells Masters where he lost to Dominic Thiem. However, he has got another chance here to add to his title tally. The reigning ATP Basel champion reached the final without facing any major difficulties.

Except for his opening match against Radu Albot, he has won his remaining fixtures in straight sets, including the ones against Denis Shapovalov and Kevin Anderson.

Federer v Isner Predictions & Tips

Isner is a player who loves tie-breakers and doesn’t give his opponents a lot of chance to break his service. With a massive service game, he will be hoping to push Federer to the limit and test his endurance.

Meanwhile, the Swiss will benefit from his massive experience and his exceptional return. With only two defeats this season, it will be hard for Isner to put an end to Federer’s dream run.

Tip: Under 24.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Bet365)
