Karolina Pliskova v Mona Barthel Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with Pliskova leading their head-to-head series two matches to one. Barthel won their first meeting in the Bronx in a one-sided encounter in 2011, but their last two meetings in 2014 were both won by the Czech woman in straight sets, with the first of those matches coming on the clay of Bad Gastein.

Pliskova Looking for First Singles Title of 2019

The number one seed and world number five is back in Prague playing in front of her home fans in a venue where she won the title in 2015.

She will be hoping that those advantages will be enough to enable her to finally get a chance this week to add to the 12 WTA career titles she has so far won in her career, having come close several times since the start of the year.

Most notably, she was beaten in the final at Miami by Ashleigh Barty, after losing at the semi-final stage in Melbourne to Naomi Osaka. There was also a semi-final appearance in Lugano, but, last week, she was beaten in the third round in Stuttgart by Viktoria Azarenka.

On the plus side, she did win the Indian Wells Challenger doubles title with her partner Evgeniya Rodina.

Barthel, 2017 Winner Buoyant after Stuttgart

World number 88 Barthel won this tournament in 2017, ironically beating Karolina’s identical twin sister, Kristyna, in the final. That was the last of her four WTA senior singles titles to date, which included another clay court triumph, the 2014 Swedish Open.

A player known for her strong serve, and willingness to approach the net, she has been out of the winners’ circle for some time. However, she comes into this match buoyed by having won the Stuttgart Open doubles title on Sunday, lifting the cup with her partner Anna-Lena Friedsam.

Given that event was also played on clay and her record here, she will have no fears taking on the home favourite on Tuesday.

Pliskova v Barthel Predictions & Tips

Pliskova will start the heavy odds-on favourite at 3/14, whilst Barthel is priced at 4/1. Barthel has a good record in this event, but so has Pliskova, and, playing in front of her home crowd, will be in no mood to surrender easily, and will want to avenge her sister’s defeat against this same opponent.

Tip: Pliskova to win in straight sets: 16/25 (888Sport)
