What Happened at the 2022 Citi Open?

Nick Kyrgios continued to exhibit some brilliant form as he overcame another surprise finalist Yoshihito Nishioka in the final of the 2022 Washington Open to win the men’s singles title. Both were unseeded players coming into the final.

Having won the title in 2019 before this, Kyrgios needed to save five match-points in his quarterfinal match against Frances Tiafoe before crushing Mikael Ymer in the semifinals. The Aussie wasn’t broken even once in the entire tournament though.

The women’s singles title was won by Liudmilla Samsonova who overcame Kaia Kanepi in the final.

Played for the first time on the women’s circuit after a two-year break, the WTA Washington Open also saw an unseeded player in Samsonova win the tournament, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

This was after the top seeded Jessica Pegula fell in the second round to Daria Saville and the second seeded Emma Raducanu made it as far as the quarterfinals only.

The men’s singles competition at the 2021 edition of the Washington Open was won by Jannik Sinner, who defeated Mackenzie McDonald in a hard-fought final. Sinner won 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

This was after McDonald had defeated the defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the first round itself, and the top seeded Rafael Nadal fell in the third round of the competition.

Sinner defeated Jenson Brooksby and McDonald overcame Kei Nishikori in the semifinals.

The women’s competition wasn’t held in 2021.

The 2020 edition of the Citi Open was cancelled because of the pandemic. Here’s what happened in the 2019 edition.

In the men’s half, Nick Kyrgios clinched the Citi Open title by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final, but it proved to be a turnaround in the Russian’s career as he went on to make it to six successive finals including this one at Washington and US Open. He won three of those titles.

Top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas made the semifinal but a lost a tough, three-set match to Kyrgios that went into a final set tie-breaker. Medvedev overcame sixth seed Marin Cilic in the quarterfinal and lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk in the semifinal.

This was after Alexander Zverev won the 2018 title after defeating the Australian wonder-kid Alex de Minaur in the final with 6-2, 6-4. That was among the better performances in the season by the German, who had appeared quite off at certain moments.

Zverev’s path to glory was quite impressive. With all the top seeds enjoying a bye into the second round, the German No. 1 started his campaign with a straight-set win over Malek Jaziri. Then, he met his brother Mischa in the second round and followed it with impressive wins over Kei Nishikori and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

As for the other half of the bracket, Alex de Minaur had a path full of resistance, starting with Vasek Pospisil and Steve Johnson. In the third round, he overcame the Korean prodigy Hyeon Chung in a battle of young stars.

In the quarterfinal, de Minaur got a lucky break when Andy Murray withdrew from the quarterfinal and gave him a walkover into the semifinal. There, he dismantled Andrey Rublev in three sets to meet Zverev in the final.

As for the women’s half, Jessica Pegula proved to be a surprise winner of the 2019 edition of the Washington Open, as she ran past Camila Giorgi in straight sets to clinch the title. It was a stunning quarterfinal lineup as just one of the seeded players, Hsieh Su-wei made the last-eight stage and she was knocked out in that round too.

In the semis, Giorgi overcame Caty McNally while Pegula defeated Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya to set up the decider.

Svetlana Kuznetsova had won the 2018 Citi Open title, defeating Donna Vekic in the final with 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-2. It was Svetlana’s second title in Washington and one of the first ones in quite some time.

Starting with Kristie Ahn in the first match, she moved past Ana Bogdan in the second round. After that, she enjoyed a relatively easy path into the semifinal, with the likes of Yulia Putintseva and Andrea Petkovic standing in her way. Impressively, Svetlana won all of her previous round matches in straight sets.

As for her opponent Vekic, she first overcame Caroline Dolehide followed by Fanny Stollar. It is worth mentioning that her match against Stollar was quite an intriguing affair, last three sets. Thereafter, it was just a matter of dispatching Magda Linette and Saisai Zheng.
