The Palermo Open has been around for a few years having first been played in 1990 as Tier V event to begin with before becoming a Tier IV tournament from 1993.

It returned in 2009 as a WTA International competition before being out of action between 2014 and 2018.

In 2019, Palermo became one of the two new entrants on the circuit, with the other one being the Baltic Open. It takes place in the Italian resort town of Palermo on outdoor clay courts amidst picturesque hills and an exceptional weather.

In addition to amazing wine, delectable foods, and a serene atmosphere, you will get to witness some of the best tennis athletes battling it out for a chance to win the title and get some momentum for the US Open Series.

Before going off the grid, the WTA Palermo Open featured many Italian superstars like Sara Errani, Flavia Pennetta, Roberta Vinci, among others. Despite the fact that the event takes place a couple of weeks after the Wimbledon, it never stopped being a favourite sporting event among the locals.

Martina Trevisan (later withdrew), Yulia Putintseva, Zhang Shuai, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Caroline Garcia, Irina-Camelia Begu, Anna Bondar, Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Palermo Open?

After the defending champion Danielle Collins opted to not take part and the top seeded Martina Trevisan withdrew from the tournament, it was the sixth seeded Irina Camelia Begu who won the title in 2022.

Begu defeated Lucia Bronzetti in the final 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the tournament win.

Fourth seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo made it as far as the semifinals while three of the other seeded players, Caroline Garcia, Anna Bondar and Nuria Parrizas Diaz exited from the competition in the last eight stage.

American player and the top seed in the competition, Danielle Collins went on to bag her first ever WTA singles title, after overcoming Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final.

Collins, who went through the tournament without losing a set, defeated Ruse 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

Zhang Shuai and Oceane Dodin were the other semifinalists.

Unseeded Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro clinched the 2020 edition of the Palermo Open by beating the fourth seeded Anett Kontaveit in straight sets in the final.

Ferro’s road to the final consisted of victories over Nadia Podoroska, a player who would go really deep at the French Open, eighth seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, former French Open finalist Sara Errani and Italy’s Camila Giorgi.

Kontaveit had surprised the top seeded Petra Martic in the semifinal 6-2, 6-4.

There was a surprise winner in the form of Jil Teichmann in 2019 and the eighth seeded Swiss won the title by beating Kiki Bertens in straight sets in the final. Bertens, who was the top seed and a top-20 player, had gone into the final as a heavy favourite but came cropped against her opponent.

Interestingly, Teichmann did not drop a single set in the entire tournament, and while Bertens was the only seeded player she faced in the entire tournament, her showing shone light on her excellent showing. None of the other six seeds even made the last-eight stage of the competition while only three others entered the second round.
