Venus Williams v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came at the Rogers Cup in 2017 and Venus Williams needed to overcome a second set blip to win that opening round encounter in three sets.

Venus on a Five-Match Losing Streak

Ever since making it to the second round at the Lexington Open, which was the first tournament after the pandemic break last year, Venus Williams hasn’t won a match. In the process she has lost five in a row, including one to her sister Serena Williams, and another at the hands of Victoria Azarenka but the fight has always been there.

Unfortunately for Venus, that hasn’t translated into results for a while now.

In the whole of 2020, that Lexington Open victory was her only win in main draws of WTA competitions. Eight losses punctuated that effort.

Even taking into account the fact the pandemic-induced break was more difficult for her, the 2019 season performances since making it to the quarterfinals at the Indian Wells Open left a lot to desire. As a result, she has now fallen to 80th in the world, and the 40-year-old would hope she can turn things around with a stronger start to the year.

Begu Struggles on Hard Court

Once a 22nd-ranked player in the world, Begu has fallen down to 79th and as a result of that, was forced to play in a couple of ITF events and a WTA $125k competition. She won one of those ITF tournaments and then doubled it up with a victory at the Indian Wells $125k competition.

Begu returned after the pandemic break to then play at the WTA Prague where she reached the semifinal, and then qualified for the Rome Open where she reached the second round.

Two very early defeats at the US Open and French Open, however, pushed back her progress and she ended the season without qualifying for the Ostrava Open and a first round defeat at the Linz Open.

Venus v Begu Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between two equals in terms of their form on hard court, but Venus’ better experience should give her a very small edge here.

Tip: Venus Williams to win: 4/5 (bet365)
