The 2020 ATP & WTA season begins in the first week of January with the usual Hopman Cup getting replaced by the ATP Cup. There are a few other changes to the schedule as well with the Adelaide International joining the circuit in January.
Other than the tournament at Adelaide, the WTA circuit will also see the addition of Berlin, apart from the WTA Lyon, WTA Bad Homburg and WTA Albany making their debuts. There will be an increase in the prize money of all WTA tournaments as well.
On the ATP circuit too there are a few changes including the maiden Adelaide International competition. The Pune Open, which was usually played in the month of January will now be hosted after the Australian Open. The ATP Sofia has been postponed to week 39, while the Antalya Open will be replaced by another competition.
The 2020 tennis season will begin on January 6 with the five ATP and WTA tournaments across the two circuits. The ATP tour will have the Doha Open and the ATP Cup kick-starting the events while the WTA side will see players participate at the Auckland Open, Shenzhen Open and Brisbane International.
The first major of the year, Australian Open will be held from January 20 onward, before the actin will move towards the first two Masters of the year. Known as the Sunshine Masters, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open will fill up most of March before action moves towards the clay court competitions around the world.
The Monte-Carlo Masters, Barcelona Open, Madrid Masters and the Italian Open are some of the main clay court competitions in April and May in the leadup to the French Open, the year’s second major.
Following the French Open will be a short window for the grass swing where eight tournaments across women’s and men’s tennis will be played. This will be followed by the 2020 Wimbledon starting in the final week of July.
A few of the remaining clay court events will be held in July, a month that will end with the 2020 Olympics in which tennis will be played. The US hard court swing follows soon after with the Cincinnati Masters and Rogers Cup, while the newly added Albany Open will also be played in the lead-up to the year’s final major, the US Open. It begins on August 31.
The Asian swing, Laver Cup and the year’s final two Masters, Shanghai and Paris will be followed by the year-ending WTA and ATP Finals.
