A WTA 250 event which is played on outdoor grass, the WTA Birmingham Open has been around since 1982.

It has been called by various names over the years, starting with the Edgbaston Cup and was followed by Dow Chemical Classic and Dow Classic till 1992, before the name DFS Classic stuck for a period of 15 years till 2007.

More recently it has been called the Aegon Classic, Nature Valley Classic, Viking Classic and its current avatar as Rothesay Classic.

2023 WTA Birmingham Schedule & Dates

The women’s section of the 2023 Birmingham Open will be played from Monday, June 19 with its first round matches and the women’s singles final will be held on Sunday, June 25.

The qualifying rounds will be played a couple of days before the start of the main draw matches.

The 2020 tournament had got cancelled because of the global pandemic.

The Birmingham Classic last season saw Jelena Ostapenko start things off as the top seed and she was joined by the likes of Simona Halep and Camila Giorgi. Barbora Krejcikova was expected to feature in the tournament but opted out of it.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Birmingham?

Beatriz Haddad Maia continued with her excellent form when she overcame the injured Zhang Shuai in the final of the 2022 WTA Birmingham to win another title. Haddad Maia was leading 5-4 when her opponent retired from the encounter.

The Brazilian had earlier stunned Petra Kvitova in the first round, before overcoming the third seeded Camila Giorgi in the quarterfinals and then shocking Simona Halep, the second seed in the semifinals.

Shuai made the final by edging out Sorana Cirstea in the semifinal.

Ons Jabeur won the 2021 edition of the WTA Birmingham by defeating Daria Kasatkina in straight sets as the second seed at the tournament.

This was after Jabeur had overcome Heather Watson and Kasatkina crushed Coco Vandeweghe in their respective semifinals.

Top seeded Elise Mertens was knocked out of the competition in the very first round.

Ash Barty will kick-start the 2021 edition of the tournament as the defending champion, having won the title in 2019 by beating the eighth seeded Julia Goerges in the final in straight sets. The 2020 edition was obviously cancelled because of the illness issues.

None of the other seeded players barring these two, made it to the semifinal with Petra Martic and Barbora Strycova taking the other two places.

Top seeded Naomi Osaka had a tough first round match against Maria Sakkari before getting stunned by Yulia Putintseva in the second, while Britain’s seventh seeded went down to Jelena Ostapenko at the same stage.

Also getting knocked out in the second round was Karolina Pliskova, getting beaten by her identical twin Kristyna Pliskova, in what was the first such match at the WTA level.
