This year’s WTA Finals will be played in the last week of October, 2017 and will see some of the top-ranked women battling it out for the ultimate women’s tennis glory. Latest WTA Finals Tips, Predictions & Odds can be found here.
The singles defending champion is Svetlana Kuznetsova and doubles defending champions are Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
The WTA Finals are set to commence next week and the eight players who are going to compete in Singapore have been decided. The 2017 WTA Finals marks the end of the exciting WTA Tour we’ve witnessed this year.
Considering how the season went, we can only hope that the WTA Finals will live up to the expectations and provide us with some entertaining matches.
Considering the obvious names on the list first, we have Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina.
The ladies are placed in the rankings in the same order as mentioned here, with Halep being the World No. 1, while Svitolina, in a remarkable debut in the top 10, is the World No. 4.
All the four players have had an interesting stint on the tour this year. While none of them has been completely consistent on the whole, each of them has registered a couple of big wins to make it to Singapore.
For instance, Muguruza won the Wimbledon and Western & Southern Open, while Halep won the Madrid Masters, in addition to being the runner-up in China Open, Italian Open and Cincinnati.
Pliskova won three events on the WTA Premier circuit, while Svitolina, who has been the most impressive of all, won five titles in total – three Premier 5 events and two International events.
Moving down in the order, we have Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Ostapenko and Caroline Garcia. The interesting thing about Williams and Wozniacki is that, between the two of them, they have only one title which was by Wozniacki in Tokyo.

Garbine Muguruza to win the title
What helped them through here was the consistent runner-up feats. The American lost in the finals of Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Wozniacki lost in no less than six finals! Nonetheless, given her re-entry into the top 10, she has done quite a remarkable job this year after struggling with her form over the last couple of seasons.
Coming to Ostapenko, she rose to stardom after defeating Halep in the final of French Open – a feat which Halep is sure to avenge if given the chance in Singapore.
She also won the Korea Open, along with reaching the semifinals in Wuhan Open and China Open. However, the most impressive feat of all was achieved by Garcia, who, up until the start of the Wuhan Open, was nowhere in the contention for the race to Singapore.
She came out of nowhere and won the Wuhan Open, defeating the likes of Angelique Kerber, Dominika Cibulkova and Ekaterina Makarova.
While this may appear to be a fluke, she repeated the same feat in the prestigious China Open too, where she won a 1000 points and the ticket to Singapore after defeating Svitolina, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep.
In just two weeks, she turned her form around and moved into the top 10, all the way from the 20th position. She is undoubtedly the dark horse of the tournament and may very well win the entire event.
But as we’ve seen over the years on the WTA Tour, it is absolutely impossible to predict the outcome with utmost certainty of any match. On any given day, even the top ranked players may succumb to the underdogs.
With several new entrants in the WTA Finals 2017, this is surely going to be an exciting event to watch. The latest WTA Finals tips will be updated below as soon as the players’ list for the competition is revealed.
