Wimbledon Predictions: Federer Reckons Nadal Among Favourites

Roger Federer Picks his Wimbledon Favourites

Defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer thinks he will have tough competition from Rafael Nadal at this year’s premier tennis tournament that will begin in London from July.

Nadal, who enters the 2018 Wimbledon after having won his 11th French Open title, will look to add to his Grand Slam tally but Federer’s brilliant record on grass could well come in his way. However, Federer reckons Nadal could be his biggest challenger while the likes of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will give him a tough fight too.

Speaking to the media, Federer said of Nadal he will be in the right shape for the competition.

He added: “Otherwise I haven’t thought too much about who could be favourite. Rafa’s won Wimbledon twice, so he’s no one-trick pony.”

What seems to have found favour with Federer is Nadal’s improvement on grass every year and his new-found aggression on that surface.

Federer also complimented Nadal saying he’s not just the best player on clay, his tennis is much to watch on all other surfaces, including grass, where he has won two Wimbledon titles.

Federer also pointed at other players who could be potential threats to his defence.

“Then you also have (Marin) Cilic, (Juan Martin) Del Potro and, I hope, Novak (Djokovic) will come back strong. He has already shown good tennis this year. I also hope that (Andy) Murray and Stan (Wawrinka) will come back.”

A lot has been spoken of the youngster Alexander Zverev’s chances, and fans are awaiting his breakout year. Federer reckons 2018 could be the one and pointed out to his five-setter at the French Open which would have pointed him in the right direction.

Zverev, who has already made it to the final of the Miami Masters earlier this year, will be looking to continue that form going into the second half of the year. ”

Federer said of Zverev: “He’s also shown how great he can play on grass. His service and his return open up all possibilities for him.”

Interestingly, Federer also made a bold prediction regarding the 2018 Football World Cup. He said, Switzerland, who are 100/1 (Betway) to win the title, could go on to win the tournament. Interestingly, if Switzerland do make it to the final they will be playing on July 15, the same day as the Wimbledon final. Federer starts off at 6/4 (Betway) to win the Wimbledon.
