Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic lost a historic doubles match against Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson but by then Team Europe had already racked up a 3-0 lead on the opening day of the Laver Cup.

While Sock has struggled in his singles play this year, his doubles record has been brilliant in 2018 as the Wimbledon and US Open titles would testify. However, Sock and his South African partner Anderson were going up against gazillion title-winner Federer and Djokovic, who had also won the Wimbledon and US Open titles this year but in singles.
The match went to script in the first set when Federer and Djokovic, who can finish the year as the top-ranked player, won it in a tie-breaker 7-6, but Sock and Anderson came back quickly to win the second.
The third set, which is essentially a first-to-reach-10 points tie-breaker was more or less one-way traffic as Sock and Anderson took full control and sent the multiple Grand Slam winners packing.
This was after Grigor Dimitrov, Kyle Edmund and David Goffin had all won their opening singles matches to take Team Europe to a 3-0 lead. Each win on the first day is worth one point, while it awards teams two points apiece on day two and three points each on day three.
Dimitrov defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 in a one-sided opening match to give Europe the lead, before Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund overcame Jack Sock’s challenge in a tough three-setter. He won 6-4, 5-7, [10-6] to take Europe 2-0 up.
The closest match of the day, however, saw David Goffin go head to head with Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and after they had shared the spoils over the first two sets, it was a rather close affair in the third. Goffin finally prevailed 11-9 after having given away a 5-1 lead in the final set at one stage.
