Elina Svitolina v Danielle Collins Head to Head

Danielle Collins beat Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-1 in their only meeting to date at the 2002 Brisbane International.

Former Champion Makes Canada Return

Not even in her wildest dreams could Elina Svitolina envisage this remarkable comeback. The Ukrainian star returned from maternity leave in early April and her impact has been rather imminent.

Svitolina has won 19 of 29 matches at all levels and even managed to win her first WTA title in two years at the Strasbourg Open before the Roland Garros.

She wasn’t just content in making up the numbers in the draw, and her form at Grand Slam level was equally brilliant.

The 28-year-old advanced into the second week of the French Open and Wimbledon, making the semifinals in the latter where she defeated World No. 1 Iga Swiatek en route.

Svitolina speaks fondly of how events back home have motivated and spurred her to wear her heart out during the competition, and each win is dedicated to the frontline soldiers in her native Ukraine.

Collins Battles Through Qualifying

Danielle Collins needed to qualify for the main draw in Montreal at the weekend, overcoming some serious challenges against Canada’s very own Eugenie Bouchard and then fellow American Emina Bektas.

The match against Bektas had upset written all over it given the kind of form the 30-year-old was in coming to the event, winning seven of her past eight matches.

And Collins was not in a happy spot, winning once since Miami. Last week, she was soundly beaten by Liudmila Samsonova at the WTA 500 in Washington.

The match against Bektas was a marathon, taking two hours and 26 minutes. Collins had the chance to put things to bed but wasted four match points in a titanic tiebreak in the second set, which was eventually won by Bektas 12-10.

And despite falling a break down late in the third set, Collins broke back when Bektas served for the match, and ultimately prevailed when she won the final two games of the match.

Svitolina v Collins Prediction and Tip

I think everyone’s biggest fear was whether Svitolina was capable of rediscovering the form that took her to World No. 3 at her absolute pomp. And on the evidence of what she is producing week in and week out, it’s beyond what we imagined. Expect the Ukrainian to power past the qualifier.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Svitolina to win: 8/13
