Former world number four Bianca Andreescu last played in the Citi Open, where she was handed a tricky three-set loss at the hands of Marta Kostyuk in round one. The match went on for a little under three hours and saw the Canadian lose 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(5).
Of course, she will fancy her chances of doing much better in Montreal, seeing that this is her home tournament. Andreescu was a Canadian Open champion in 2019 and has since consistently reached round three twice.
Looking at her present season, it has been a slow year for the current World No. 44. Bianca has 15 wins and just as many losses.
Her best results include reaching the semifinal in Hua Hin and round four in Miami. Apart from that, Andreescu has spent most of the year in mid-stage appearances.

Giorgi Clears the Qualifiers
A champion in 2021, Camila Giorgi aims to do the impossible again – this time as a qualifier.
Just two years after winning the biggest title of her career, the Italian finds herself starting from the very bottom. Over the weekend, the 31-year-old dismissed Elvina Kalieva and Ashlyn Krueger, 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, respectively.
Her record now is 20-14, with her last tournament being Wimbledon, where she fell in round one to Varvara Gracheva.
Giorgi was slated to feature in Budapest and Warsaw next but withdrew from the tournament.
Now ranked #51, Camila has had a mixed 2023. She won the title in Merida back in February and, later on, the semifinal in Eastbourne. These two were the only events where the Italian picked up more than two wins in a week.

Andreescu has the home advantage and will start as the odds-on favourite. Giorgi’s fitness may be tested in this match, but given Bianca’s slow season, the two are more or less on equal footing for this one.
