Martic Has struggled on Hard Courts This Year

Petra Martic will be making her fifth appearance at the Canadian Open. She has however reached the second round just once in her past four appearances.

The Croatian is 21-16 across levels this season, but she has a woeful 3-7 record on hard courts.

Martic produced her best result of the season on the indoor court of Linz, where she reached the final of the tournament before falling to Anasatasia Potapova.

A two-time tour level champion, it was Martic’s sixth final at the top level. the 32-year-old also reached the quarterfinals in Madrid and Eastborune. So the Croatian has been playing well on all surfaces and would like to finish strongly on hard courts as well.

She has struggled on the surface so far but will look to strike form in Montreal.

Tsurenko Comes Through Qualifiers

Lesia Tsurenko made it to the main draw of teh Canadian Open for the fourth time. Compared to Martic she has fared much better in the tournament, and her best was a quarterfinal finish in 2015.

The Ukrainian defeated Canada’s Bianca Jolie Fernandez 6-1, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Elizabeth Mandlik 6-4, 6-2 in the second qualifying round to reach the main draw.

Ranked no. 44th in the world, Tsurenko has displayed excellent form throughout the season. She ended a four-year final drought by reaching her sixth career final earlier this year in Hua Hin, but could not add to her four previous titles, falling to Zhu Lin in the final.

While she is 22-5 across levels on hard courts, most of those wins have come in either qualifying rounds or lower level tournaments. That said, Tsurenko has successfully raised her game in the big tournaments. She had made it to the fourth rounds at Roland Garros and Wimbledon and the third round in Indian Wells. Coming into the tournament in good form, Tsurenko could well beat the higher ranked player in the opener.
