World no. 8 Jannik Sinner is in outstanding form this season.

The 21-year-old is 37-11 at the tour level and will be playing for the first time since his semifinal exit from Wimbledon.

It was the first time the Italian had reached the last four stage in a Grand Slam tournament but he couldn’t make the final, having gone down to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

A seven-time tour level champion from 10 finals, Sinner has featured in three finals this season. While he won the title in Montpellier, but finished runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami.

He was also a semifinalist in Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo, in addition to the final four finish in Wimbledon. So overall it has been a fantastic year for Sinner.

He will be making his third appearance at the Canadian Open. Having won just one match in his previous two appearances, Sinner will be hoping to make a deep run this year.

Berrettini Eases Past Barrère

Matteo Berrettini is off to a solid start at the Canadian Open, knocking out Grégoire Barrère in the first round on Monday.

The world no. 38 struck 10 aces and dropped just nine points on his serve in the entire match as he ousted the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 15 minutes. Berrettini, who struck 24 winners in the match, saved 1 of 2 break points and converted 4 of 7 to sail into the second round.

Berrettini, who had lost in the first round on his Canadian Open debut last year, improved his season record to 11-8 at the tour level.

He struggled with his form in the first quarter and then was sidelined with an injury during the clay and the initial part of the grass court season. He found form at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round and will feel good to have returned to hard courts with a win.

This is going to be an intriguing contest between the two Italians. While Berrettini is the more experienced campaigner, Sinner has been the better performer this year.
