Elena Rybakina v Jennifer Brady Head to Head

Rybakina and Brady have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Rybakina Returns from Wimbledon Showing

The last time Rybakina took to court for a competitive match was on July 12, nearly a month ago. She was beaten by Ons Jabeur in what was a repeat of the showing from the previous year’s Wimbledon when Rybakina had triumphed to win her maiden Grand Slam.

Incidentally, Rybakina now returns to the Canadian Open in which she has featured twice before this and won just one match.

Having gotten bundled out in the first round of the 2021 version at Montreal itself, Rybakina then moved to Toronto last year to lose narrowly in the second round to Cori Gauff. Rybakina had complained of having struggled to get a lot of training in following her Wimbledon triumph at that time.

This time around she would have had a better schedule and while it’s surprising to see her opt out of any of the competitions before this, Rybakina would be better-prepared for this tournament.

Up against a player who is returning from a long layoff this month, Rybakina will hold a strong edge.

Brady in a Shock Win over Ostapenko

At her peak, Brady had touched a ranking of 13th in the world but a knee injury at the 2021 Cincinnati Open in a match against Jelena Ostapenko proved to be a heart-breaking event. Since that injury, she hadn’t played tennis for nearly two years and returned to the courts last month with an appearance on the ITF circuit.

Since then Brady has played at the Washington Open where she routed Anhelina Kalinina in the first round and then fell to Madison Keys in the second.

Coming here in Montreal and facing Ostapenko in her opener would have brought back memories from that injury but she looked to have coped well in the end.

Brady overcame her Latvian opponent in a strange contest that saw her win 7-6 (7), 0-6, 7-6 (8) after having saved two set-points in the first set and two match-points in the third.

In short, Brady faced 16 break-points to Ostapenko’s six, lost her serve five times as opposed to two for her opponent and faced a total of four chances across two sets to lose them and yet, came away a winner.

Can Brady now use this same fighting spirit against Rybakina?

Rybakina v Brady Prediction and Tip
