Andrey Rublev v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions.

Rublev Won a Clay Title After Wimbledon

While most of the top players opted to take a break from the ATP circuit since featuring at Wimbledon this year, Rublev was on the courts again and featured in two clay court competitions.

At the first in Bastad, the Wimbledon quarterfinalist won the title by defeating Casper Ruud in the final. He followed that up with a shock second round defeat in Hamburg to Daniel Altmaier.

All of that won’t count for too much though as Rublev now returns to his most preferred surface, a surface on which he has won nine titles at the highest level. The catch is that six of those have come indoors, which are traditionally quicker surfaces than the outdoor hardcourt ones.

This year, Rublev’s record outdoors on hardcourt is 13-7 – good without being dazzling. And indoors, he played in just one tournament in Rotterdam and lost in his opener.

He now has a chance to change that around for the season as he looks to better his previous career-best showing of a third round appearance at this tournament.

McDonald Eases Past Karatsev

Aslan Karatsev was a second favourite coming into his opener against McDonald but not by much. The manner in which McDonald clinched his win though it looked like the difference between the two players was stark.

McDonald won 6-3, 6-4 in a match lasting an hour and 44 minutes with the American needing to come back from being a break down in both sets.

In the first, Karatsev broke McDonald in the opening game itself, only for his opponent to retaliate with a break back in the second game. In the sixth, McDonald broke again to wrap up the set.

It was a better start for McDonald in the second when he grabbed the early break but Karatsev then went 3-1 up. McDonald broke right back to even things out at 3-3 in what was turning out to be a topsy-turvy set before clinching a decisive break in the ninth game as well.

There was no looking back for McDonald who served it out in the next game after saving a break-point.

This follows a second round appearance at the Washington Open for McDonald. Can he make it two in two?
