Karolina Muchova v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two players, all of which have come in hardcourt competitions and Muchova leads 2-1. Two of those came earlier this season at Dubai and Miami and both have won one apiece.

Muchova Thwarts Potapova

It’s been the kind of a season that should hold Muchova in a very good stead and she continued showing why she is rated so highly with her first round win over Anastasia Potapova.

Potapova herself is a very solid player and has climbed up the rankings charts, breaking into the top 30 in the process. And while Muchova was the favourite coming into their encounter, it was never going to be a straightforward opening win.

In the end, Muchova needed an hour and 47 minutes but came through in straight sets against Potapova to seal off her maiden career win at the Canadian Open.

She won 7-6 (4), 6-2 as she shrugged off her inability to serve out the first set at 5-3 and the squandering of two set-points off her opponent’s serve at 5-4. Even in the tie-breaker that followed, Muchova missed two set-points at 6-2 before sealing off the set and then romped to two breaks of serves in the second to win the tie.

Muchova should have it a lot easier in the second round.

Cirstea Scrapes Past Gracheva

It took Cirstea over two hours to register her opening round win over Varvara Gracheva but the Romanian will be reasonably satisfied with her effort after having struggled to get going at this tournament since her finals appearance in 2013.

Having won just two matches over the past 10 years of this tournament, Cirstea saved all the three break-points she faced but it was her inability to find a way past her opponent’s serve that was a problem.

In the first set, it took Cirstea to the 10th game where she overcame Gracheva’s serve as she served to stay in the set. The second set proved to be even more difficult for Cirstea who was coming off a similar performance at the Washington Open where she had won her opener 6-3, 7-6 (13) against Petra Martic.

It went into a tie-breaker again but this time around Cirstea was a lot quicker in clinching it and making it through.

Muchova v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Muchova starts off a favourite here and we believe she should come through in two fighting sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Muchova to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
