Liudmilla Samsonova v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both have won two apiece. Two of these came this year, at Abu Dhabi and Miami, and Samsonova won the first while Qinwen clinched the second. This is a close rivalry for now.

Samsonova Shrugs off Siniakova Fight
Katerina Siniakova was 2/1 to surprise Samsonova in their first round clash and for some time it looked like a shock result was on the cards.
However, Samsonova fought back to clinch her second round place with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over her Czech opponent in two hours and seven minutes. The 15th-seeded Samsonova shrugged off three breaks of serves including two in the first set to grab her victory and a place in the second round.
Having lost the first set, Samsonova then saved four break-points in the very first game of the second and was down a break in the decider. Both times she fought back to break Siniakova twice in that set and went on to finish off the contest by winning it off her first match-point.
This follows Samsonova’s solid showing in Washington where she had defeated Danielle Collins, Marta Kostyuk and Sorana Cirstea on her way to the semifinal.
Things could remain as challenging for Samsonova against an opponent who has beaten her in the past.

Zheng in a Three-Set Battle with Kostyuk
Marta Kostyuk continues to rise on the WTA charts and with her results at the highest level. And while she wasn’t quite the favourite going into her opening round encounter against Qinwen Zheng, she would have felt confident of her chances given her recent record.
Qinwen ended up needing two hours and 10 minutes to clinch her opening round win as she defeated Kostyuk in three sets to march on to the second round. She had made the quarterfinal of this very competition last season.
With a career-best ranking of 19th in the world, Zheng saved both the break-points she faced in the opening set while breaking her opponent twice. In the second, the shoe was on the other foot as it was Kostyuk who ended up getting the better of the Chinese player’s serve twice and levelling things out.
The decider was a cagey affair as neither player gave the other too much respite on their serves. There was a total of one break-point in the entire set and Zheng broke Kostyuk off it. She squandered three match-points on her own serve before winning off the fourth.
Can she now take that one step closer to emulating her previous best in this competition?
