Sloane Stephens v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head
The pair have never met before on the WTA Tour.
Stephens Seeking a Reversal of Fortunes
The season so far hasn’t been that kind to the American. With a win-loss record of 6-6 as of the Miami Open, she has slipped down to the eighth place in the singles ranking. Her best run of the season came in the Australian Open where she reached the fourth round.
In addition to that, she also reached the third round in Miami, losing to Tatjana Maria in straight sets rather shockingly. That defeat was one of the many instances this season that highlighted Stephens’ struggles with her form.
The 2018 French Open finalist has now got a chance to redeem herself on the tour. With the Volvo Car Open being a clay tournament – a surface that Stephens actually prefers, she will be hoping to get back to her winning ways.
Tormo Starts with an Impressive Win
Sara Sorribes Tormo started her campaign in Charleston with a straight-set victory over the Hungarian Fanny Stollar. That win marks the third time this season that the young Spaniard has reached the second round in the main draw of an event.
She started the year on a rather decent note, reaching the quarterfinal in WTA Auckland. However, she followed it with a series of early losses in Hobart and the Australian Open. At the same time, Tormo has had some luck in lower-tier tournaments.
For instance, she was a semifinalist in ITF Burnie and a quarterfinalist in the 125K Series event in Indian Wells. Her last event was in Miami, where she lost in the second round to Donna Vekic.
Interestingly, the significant title that she has ever won came in Monterrey itself last year, when she lifted the doubles trophy with Naomi Broady.
Stephens v Tormo Predictions & Tips
Stephens will start this match as the favourite to win, given her superior winning experience at 2/5 (bet365) . However, it may not be an easy win for her considering her recent struggles with form. Tormo too hasn’t been that clinical of late and it will be interesting to see how far she can push Stephens.
Tip: Under 18.5 games in the match: 6/4 (William Hill)
